I've got to wait for some supplies for the B-17 so I decided to build a model from my stash to pass the time. I picked this model up several months ago an d I've been holding off building it.

Now the builder's review in the May 2017 issue of FSM did a better job of telling the pro's and cons of this model then I could hope to. However I will say this is a pretty good detailed kit.

I've got the cockpit, fusalge, and wings assembled and just have a few pieces to put on before I start painting.

Looking good Greg. I'll have to go digging through my FSM back issues to see if I have it and re-read that review. It does look like a fairly detailed kit. The cockpit seems well appointed, and I love they give you decals for the instruments. That should be a given on any aircraft kit, IMHO. Pre-painted photoetch would be great, but lets not get greedy. Flying Tiger or Army Air Corp?

If it helps to narrow down the search the cover article for that issue of FSM was a build of the Fine Molds 1/48 scale X-Wing. As to which option I'm building I'm leaning towards the Army Air Corps version. Mostly due to it's the plane George Welch used to defend Pearl Harbor. Still I may pick up another from Hobby Lobby so I don't have to decide.

Thanks Greg. I found the issue. I have them collated in a printer paper box, so it was easy to find. I have a Revell (oh, the horror!) kit in my stash. I always loved the old John Wayne movie "Flying Tigers," inaccurate as it was. Might pick up the Airfix kit at Hobby Lobby being they're fairly inexpensive with the coupon.

Assembly is complete and I have started painting the P-40B. I've got both the gray and olive-drab sprayed. However I've got to do touch ups in a few spots before I can start applying decals.

Now I'm going with the decal option of the plane flown by George Welch in defense of Pearl on December 7th 1941. While I'm tempted to have done the Flying Tiger option. They say it is a plane from June of 1942 around the same time as the Battle of Midway. The pre Pearl Harbor time period for the Flying Tigers is where my interest in them lies. Still given what this kit costs I can still do that version some day in the future.

With the B-17F finished I finally put the final touches on the Airfix P-40B I have been putting off. Naturally since both models were completed around the same time I couldn't resist getting some pictures of them together.
